Chapter 13
After breakfast, they did the tourist route. Strangely, although she’d been in Philadelphia area for over seven years, she’d never taken the time to explore the city. She tried running up the steps made famous in the Rocky movie, but only made it half way up before she was out breath.
Mason, on the other hand, stood at the bottom smiling indulgently at her struggle. She rolled her eyes at him and slowly made her way back down the steps. At the bottom, he held out his arms and caught her up.
“My poor baby,” he crooned and kissed her.
She shut her eyes, enjoying being in his arms. The moment passed as Mason ended the kiss and lowered her to her feet.
Regine leaned back in his arms. “Are you feeling sorry for me? I think I did well considering I’m not in shape,” Regine said.
His eyes scanned her body like a heat sensor. “Your shape is perfect to me.”
Ignoring him, she asked, “Did you ever try the steps?”
“Actually, I did.” Mason’s brows furrowed. “Why do you ask?”
“Only a person who went to the top would stand around and watch another struggle to make it up those steps with a silly grin on his face.”
“Did you want me to rescue you?”
Regine frowned and didn’t answer. She didn’t need to be rescued. Regine refused to let herself think of him as her knight in shining armor. She’d learned the hard way that they didn’t exist.
She glanced at the man in front of her. He was extremely sexy in his body-hugging designer jeans. His lips lifted into a full-scale grin.
“You don’t have to answer the question,” he said.
“I don’t intend to.”
Mason stared at her for a long moment, then took her hand in his and guided her down the street. They strolled into a couple of antique shops, a small clothing boutique, and, eventually, the art museum. It was interesting but surprisingly intimate and very romantic. She found she was enjoying Mason’s company. There were many levels to him. Maybe he was only letting her see what he wanted her to see. It surprised her that he made her laugh. When was the last time she’d laughed without caution? The smile slipped from her face and her mind took her back to the reason she shouldn’t laugh. Would she ever be able to forgive herself? When would the pain of her actions leave her? She jerked when she realized Mason was speaking to her.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his gaze riveted on her. “You looked as if something is troubling you.”
“I’m fine.” She cleared her throat and offered him a timid smile. “Just a little tired from trying to be Wonder Woman.”
Mason laughed and tightened his arms around her waist. “Wonder Woman, huh? I like the sound of it.”
Regine grinned and pushed playfully at his shoulders. “Get your mind out of the gutter.”
“With you around, I don’t think it’s possible,” he said and leaned in for a kiss.
Before she realized it, morning had turned into evening and she’d been with Mason all day.
